'Map That' final Presentation.

Setting up: We spent a total of about 3hours blacking out the room with board, fabric and a loooot of gaffer tape. We removed all the clutter, arranged the tables to either sides of the room as a place for our boxes. We then positioned to torches hanging from the light fittings, so they hung over the boxes to show small pools of light.


The purpose of the room being pitch black was so the effect of the light from the film projector and hanging torches would highlight the 'nothingness' of Dungeness, and also emphasize the sound boxes as these were our primary responses.












The crit and presentation went well. One point raised which i found interesting was wondering if the 'shipping news' tape was really needed, as the strength of the presentation was in the sound boxes and our individual ways of representing that. Was it because we didn't have enough confidence in our own sounds, that we needed something as a backup?
In planning stages, the point of the overhead sound was to try and compete with the sound from the headphones, almost a battle to see what you can hear, which reflects the problems we had with the wind when we were at Dungeness.

Finished book!

So it's finally done! Bit unsure bout the design on the front cover, but the type i designed previously would never have gone on there in the right proportions so would have ended up looking worse. Im happy though. I like it. Think its a good format.

'Map That'- Sounds bad just from the title...

The brief:
Find an area of 10x10 meters. Study this area in great detail and collect all data necessary to produce work without having to return to the site.
Deploy methods, strategies and systems for collecting, recording and documenting information.
You are required to present your findings as: story/film, typography, photography, drawings, books, diagrams, maps.

The day:
There are 8 girls in my group, and, probably because of the weather, we set off pretty quickly in search of a space to get to work! We walked quite a long way, looking at photographing all the objects we found. I think our space was chosen because we were all sick of having our heads blown off, and it had some sort of shelter, so we set out marking the 10 meters squared.
It turns out our space was really good. It had many different elements that we can create good stuff from! We all had different jobs, collecting all information we could. Eg, measuring, weighing, photographing, making rubbings, videoing, sound recording, collecting artifacts, etc.

We got a lot of valuable information to take away. My input was recording and measuring everything in the square. well, the key objects anyway, 10m squared is pretty big!

We managed to find lots of objects to take away from the site. We are using these for the next stage in our project.

Kuniyoshi

My boyfriend and I went to the Kuniyoshi exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, the other day. General reaction, FANTASTIC!! Even michael, who really doesnt know that much about fine art said it was amazing. For a Sunday morning, i was expecting to be in and out in like 20mins, but it was rammed! you almost had to fight to get a close look at the prints. it was such a huge collection as well, with original drawings too. I learnt quite a lot about printmaking, and the way its been done in the past. i didnt know too much about it beforehand, but each print has a full description of the piece and and detaial about how it was made etc. It really was inspirational! I reccommend it. Some postcards and a print i bought:

The next stage...

I spent a huge amount of time on one drawing, then traced it in pen onto another piece. The second piece was my final poster. But, i wasnt sure what to do with the first one?! it took me soooo long the thought of throwing it away made me want to scream. SO! I have started making a book with it.
I spent a while yesterday hand printing 'O's onto the blank pages, using a cardboard stencil i cut out. ouch! it was a serious mission, i get nervous doing things like this as there really is very little margin for error.
So after that had all dried i sewed the book together. the green thread really adds something, as im plaaning on leaving the binding exposed. In my head so far, it has a board cover, with another printed 'O' and hand drawn lettering of the rest of the word 'organic,' as this is the theme for my whole project. I only stabbed myself a few times, so it went quite well! Here are photos of my stamping/sewing process.
